The Art of Contemplation

It really is an art. Both Alan Watts and Richard Rudd (The Gene Keys) have published books of the same name. Perhaps you’ve found yourself in the early mornings upon waking or the last moments before you drift into dreamland pondering some existential issue, imagining your next art piece or poem, or deciphering the meaning of some spiritual experience. Or, perhaps you’re too busy and exhausted from overworking, being in survival mode, stress, fear or grief with the current state of the world that taking a moment to breathe and let the mind wander seems far too frivolous. If I’m honest, I vacillate between the two.

It’s a form of meditation, and when given a starting point or general direction it can become a treasure hunt into the seat of our soul where we mine some serious gold. A time and place to slow down our thoughts, so we can catch the whispers of the Universe, Spirit and our Higher Self.

I’d like to invite you to explore this practice of contemplating. Maybe it’s while you’re still in bed or sitting outside listening to the birds or even on an afternoon hike…the possibilities are infinite. This is your time to connect with your inner authority [outside the noise] and find the power within instead of outsourcing it. This is your time to expand your imagination and creativity - both of which elevate all areas of your life.

The act of contemplating can actually be quite powerful in creating healing and huge energetic shifts in your consciousness. You’re moving things around in the energy body and that can lead to release and revelation - and oftentimes actual change or manifestation in our physical realm. At the very least, it gives you time and peace to process the hyperactivity and chaos of the world right now, because if we’re going to be the change we want to see in the world, we need to be centered, balanced and healing.

It’s amazing, some of our most powerful healing is available for free and already within us. And I love this practice for strengthening intuition, sense of Self, inner authority, trust and discernment. After all, if we don’t stand for something, we’ll fall for anything.

The Practice

Each week I’ll share a brief Sunday Thought, something I’ve been contemplating, as a starting point for you to explore your own thoughts and feelings on the matter. Start and let your imagination and psyche take you away. Follow them down the rabbit hole! Take three minutes, five minutes or 30 minutes. Set a timer or don’t. There’s no journaling or voice memoing required (unless you feel compelled to), just presence. Create this in a way that works for you.

This week I’ve been thinking about…

…the Dark, the Light - Good vs. Evil - and is it possible for humanity to ever reach peace and harmony? I consider all of our known history: war, suffering, famine, the rising and falling of empires, the “Golden Ages”… It’s all cyclical. Like the seasons.

In concept, I deeply believe we could all live in peace. If humanity just recognized it was all One, it could work. We’d see beyond the surface differentiators of race and religion to realize all the Creation stories, all the Gods, Goddesses and Deities are all just mental structures of the human mind within its physical realm experience/framework trying to make sense of the non-physical, but essentially at the root, they’re all the same. And We all stemmed from One source, which means technically we are all related! There’s no right God. And one culture’s God is not better than another’s. I knew this at five years old! So I’ve spent my life very frustrated by prejudice, religious conflict, oppression and war. Furthermore, WHY does it matter which origin story is true?!? Maybe they all are - again that physical realm framework.

Then I remember Yin & Yang, Day & Night, Life & Death…the cycle of Creation and Destruction and that these do not exist in isolation. There must be one to have the other. We cannot know joy without also knowing grief. The flowers cannot bloom in Summer without dying off in Winter. We cannot have peace without having war. Perhaps it is impossible to achieve world peace and perfect harmony among all living beings, because that’s not the natural order of the universe.

Or maybe the answer is both? Are we to have centuries of harmony and abundance, followed by a period of destruction, chaos, and revolution? Have we just been in a macro cycle [for eons] where Polarity is Universal Law? And right now we’re actually living through the shift into the next epoch where Polarity is replaced with Unity?

I will most likely be a life-long optimist and idealist and believe in the good in people, despite the “dark” things I have seen and experienced (both worldly and otherworldly). I will always believe that Love is the most powerful force in all the Universe. And my answer has never been to give up hope or close my heart. But am I just lying to myself? It’s quite the existential pickle.

Do you think humanity will ever reach perfect peace and harmony? Or is it Universal Law that we will forever exist in Dark and Light? And what does that mean for you? Does that mean we do or don’t keep working to shift that? How do you navigate life from that point?

Breathe in. Breathe Out. Contemplate…

Sending Love,

Abigail
